Cold snap chills Kingdom

While people across the Kingdom are bundling up in whatever warm clothing they can find, four provinces will be especially hard hit with temperatures dropping as low as 15°C which could cause the elderly and children to suffer health problems.

Mondulkiri, Oddar Meanchey, Preah Vihear, and Ratanakiri provinces are considered vulnerable with the coldest temperatures and a largely poor population.

Preah Vihear Provincial Department of Health director Dr. Kong Lo told Khmer Times yesterday that respiratory system, heart disease, and high blood pressure may react to the cold temperatures.

Dr. Lo added that it is not the first time that mountainous areas have experienced cold temperatures like this, saying that the elderly are the most vulnerable and due to their weak energy, they cannot withstand the cold.

Authorities have offered pillows and winter coats to poor people but there is not enough for everyone so people must take care of their health and keep warm by themselves by making a fire at home, drinking warm water, wearing a winter coat, and avoiding going out at night if not necessary.

The Water Resources Ministry yesterday announced that the Kingdom will be affected by a high-pressure system from China, which continues to move downward combined with northeast monsoon speed.

Preah Vihear provincial spokesman Yong Kimhean said local authorities have already informed people in every commune about measures to stay warm and they delivered winter coats to as many people as possible.
